Who Needs to Register in Nevada?

Any vehicle operated on Nevada public roads must be registered with the Nevada DMV. This includes:

New Nevada residents must register their out-of-state vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Failure to do so can result in late fees and penalties.

Nevada Registration Fees: How They're Calculated

Nevada registration fees are set by NRS 482 and consist of several components:

Basic Registration Fee

A flat $33 base fee applies to most passenger vehicles.

Governmental Services Tax (GST)

This is the largest variable component. It's calculated as:

4% × (35% of the vehicle's original MSRP)

The MSRP used is the manufacturer's suggested retail price when the vehicle was new — not what you paid for it. This means a $50,000 vehicle has a higher GST than a $20,000 vehicle, even if you bought the expensive one used.

The GST also decreases as the vehicle ages. Nevada applies a depreciation schedule that reduces the taxable value each year, so older vehicles cost less to register.

Supplemental Governmental Services Tax (SGST)

An additional 1% applied to the same base (35% of MSRP). This funds county-level services.

Smog Requirements

• Out-of-state vehicles transferring to Nevada registration

Smog check NOT required:

Registration Renewal Deadlines

Nevada vehicle registrations expire annually. Your renewal notice is mailed to the address on file with the DMV — make sure your address is current.

Key deadlines:

• Renewals are due by the last day of your registration month
• A 30-day grace period applies after expiration before late fees kick in
• After the grace period, a $6 late fee applies, plus additional penalties for extended lapses
